MES – Manufacturing Execution in Real Time
SimplyMobile MES connects planning with the shop floor: it monitors machines in real time, calculates OEE, captures downtime and ensures full traceability – and with native CMMS integration it automatically links production with maintenance.
What is an MES?
An MES (Manufacturing Execution System) is software that manages production execution directly on the shop floor – from releasing an order, through capturing machine and operator activity, to quality control and reporting. MES bridges the gap between your ERP (what and when to produce) and how production actually runs, giving managers a real-time picture of the plant.
Key SimplyMobile MES capabilities
- Real-time machine and line monitoring with automatic OEE calculation
- Downtime capture and reason analysis (Andon) – tackle your biggest time losses
- Production order execution and tracking in one always-current schedule
- In-line quality control, scrap logging and root-cause analysis
- Full batch traceability and genealogy – from raw material to finished goods
- Paperless digital work instructions and operator data capture
- Production dashboards and reports on shop-floor screens and mobile devices
Benefits for production
MES delivers measurable results: higher OEE, fewer unplanned stoppages, less scrap and an end to re-typing data from paper. Managers act on data from the current shift instead of reports that arrive the next day.
- Higher OEE and line performance
- Fewer unplanned stoppages thanks to instant response
- Less scrap and waste through quality control at the source
- Fast audits and recalls thanks to full batch genealogy
- No paper and no manual data-entry errors

MES and CMMS – one integrated ecosystem
MES and CMMS complement each other perfectly: CMMS keeps machines healthy, MES keeps production flowing. The same machine is a “maintained asset” in CMMS and a “production resource” in MES. Run together, they talk to each other – when MES detects performance degradation it can automatically raise a maintenance work order in CMMS, and planned maintenance feeds back into the production schedule. SimplyMobile delivers both systems from a single vendor, as one coherent ecosystem.

FAQ – MES software
- What is an MES and what does it do?
An MES (Manufacturing Execution System) manages production execution in real time – it tracks and controls the flow of production from raw material to finished goods, collecting data from machines and operators and surfacing metrics such as OEE.
- What is the difference between MES and ERP?
ERP plans the business – it decides what and when to produce. MES manages how production actually happens on the floor. The systems are complementary and integrate: ERP passes orders to MES, and MES returns real execution data.
- How is MES different from CMMS, and do they work together?
CMMS manages maintenance and asset history, while MES manages production execution, OEE and quality. They work best together – MES can automatically raise breakdowns in CMMS, and CMMS maintenance feeds into the production plan. With SimplyMobile, both systems come from one vendor.
- Will MES connect to our machines and systems?
Yes. SimplyMobile MES collects data from both modern controllers (PLC/SCADA) and older machines, and integrates with ERP and CMMS systems to create a single flow of information.
- How long does implementation take and when is the ROI?
We roll out in phases, starting with selected lines or cells. Measurable results (higher OEE, less downtime) typically appear within the first months, with full ROI most often within 12–36 months.
